Periodontitis can cause defects in the bone around your teeth. Osseous surgery reshapes the bone around the teeth to get rid of these defects. It is normally used to treat bone loss around multiple teeth.
The Periodontist releases the gum tissue from the bone, allowing access to the roots and bone. After the roots have been cleaned, the periodontist will reshape the bone around the teeth. Bone is removed in certain areas to restore the normal contour of the bone. Sometimes a bone grafting material may also be placed in large defects.
Finally, the periodontist will place the gums back over the remaining bone and stitch them in place.
